How Defensepedia sources its data
Defensepedia publishes fixed, structured values for military systems using publicly released, unclassified information only. Every value carries a unit, at least one public source, a confidence rating and a date.
Confidence ratings
- High Official government or manufacturer figure.
- Med Established research institution (for example CSIS, IISS, MITRE), or two independent reputable sources that agree.
- Low A single trade-press source, or sources that disagree.
Source tiers
- Tier 1. Government fact sheets and reports, manufacturer data.
- Tier 2. Research institutions: CSIS, IISS, RAND, FAS, SIPRI, MITRE ATT&CK, CISA.
- Tier 3. Reputable defense press.
- Never used. Leaked or classified material, documents not approved for public release, copied content from subscription services.
Ranges and missing values
When sources disagree, the entry shows the range and both sources. When no public source states a value, the field is left out rather than estimated.
Updates
Values stay fixed between monthly reviews. Every change is recorded in the entry's change log with the date, the new source and the reason.
